Palembang, 19 March 2022 – The Y20 Indonesia 2020 Co-chair, Michael Victor Sianipar, said that the Pre-Summit is a great opportunity for young people to exchange ideas in finding solutions for youth employment issues in Indonesia and worldwide. “I hope and believe that in the next two days we will have a great opportunity to exchange ideas. We will discuss an extremely critical issue related to global youth, which is youth employment,” Michael said in his opening speech at Novotel, Palembang, South Sumatra.

Michael explained that two sub-themes will be discussed in the Pre-Summit in Palembang, namely social safety net for young workers, especially those working in the informal and non-standard sectors, and youth social entrepreneurship. Moreover, Michael stated that the reason the Pre-Summit of Y20 Indonesia 2022 will be held in some cities, as well as involving delegates from G20 member countries, is to hear all the aspirations of young people as a whole, not just from one specific area. “We truly expect that any matter discussed today, tonight, and tomorrow, does not just end here in Palembang. However, we will develop all these ideas when the summit is held in Jakarta and Bandung,” said Michael.

The Minister of Youth and Sports Affairs, Zainudin Amali, said that the world community is facing quite challenging global issues due to the COVID-19 pandemic, especially for youth. He said such a situation is also reflected by the decrease in the Youth Development Index 2020. “Y20 is the right forum that can be used to discuss and try to solve youth issues, as well as encourage the government and leaders of the respective countries to support and identify the problem solving,” said Zainudin.

Based on the report, the Youth Development Index 2020 shows only 51 from the previous 52.61 in 2019. In that data, the unemployment rate among youth has increased during the pandemic. Regarding this condition, Zainudin said that the government encourages economic independence and young entrepreneurs to improve their abilities and self-esteem so that they can move to satisfy the labor markets. Entrepreneurship among youth is one of the five priorities of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Affairs in 2020-2024.

Based on United Nations (UN) projections, the amount of young people (15-25 years old) is predicted to increase by 7 percent in 2030. In 2025, it is predicted that 15 percent of the young workforce will be unemployed. This is stated by the Minister of Manpower, Ida Fauziyah. Ida said the Summit of Y20

Indonesia 2022 is a sustainable commitment from G20 member countries to improve youth empowerment in the sphere of the workforce.

“This event is a virtuous momentum for all of us to be able to discuss, share, and provide input to produce greater job opportunities for young people, especially during the pandemic and digital disruption. Working in an informal sector to a non-standard work, which escalates the risk and is less secure than working in the formal sector,” said Ida.

The Minister of Transportation, Budi Karya Sumadi, expressed his support for the Y20 Indonesia 2020 event. He said that the ministry of transportation will continue to encourage the role of youth in building infrastructure and competent human resources to provide the best service for the community. “In line with the Y20 Indonesia 2022 activity which focuses on priority issues on youth employment, I strongly support all the activities and initiatives initiated by the youth,” said Budi.

“Y20 is an organization that provides space for our youth who have the competence, dedication, and insight to bring progress, that is to shape the future. Therefore, youth in every province and between countries can take advantage of this space to make progress, contribute to our country, the Republic of Indonesia,” said Vice Governor of South Sumatra, Mawardi Yahya.
