South Africa’s hosting of the G20 summit in 2025 will create huge opportunities for international travel into the country, says Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille.
“We are going to use the opportunity to sell the beauty of South Africa to all G20 delegates through offering packages … encouraging them to come earlier, or stay longer and enjoy more of South Africa.”

De Lille hosted a media conference on Friday to give an overview of her first 100 days in office as a member of the government of national unity (GNU).
Next year South Africa will play host and chair the gathering of the G20 – a group of the biggest economies in the world, consisting of 19 countries, the European Union and the African Union. The last time the country chaired the G20 was in 2007, although it did not host the summit.
Hosting an international summit of this stature has the potential to create significant economic activity for the host country.
The immediate short-term benefits include higher spending in the hospitality and retail sectors, but it is also an ideal opportunity to showcase South Africa’s potential and generate tourist traffic over the longer term.
