The Urban 20 (U20) is a city diplomacy initiative which brings together cities from the G20 member countries to promote discussion and political articulation around recommendations that address economy, climate and development agendas in cities.
The U20 initiative is permanently convened by C40 Cities – a global network of mayors from the world’s main cities who work together to respond to the climate crisis – and by United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), the largest organization of local and regional governments in the world.
The idea is to facilitate lasting engagement between the G20 and cities; to raise discussion on urban issues within the international cooperation agenda; and to establish a forum for cities towards a collective message to inform G20 negotiations.
The Urban 20 was launched in December 2017 at the One Planet Summit in Paris, under the leadership of the then mayor of Buenos Aires city that would preside over the summit the following year – and the mayor of Paris. It was established in 2018 with the co-presidency of the two cities.
